In January, two people were killed in what police suspect was a tragic aftermath of street racing. The crash killed University of Georgia football recruiting analyst Chandler LeCroy and University of Georgia football player Devin Willock. Two other passengers also suffered injuries in the crash. The crash occurred just hours after the university’s celebration of winning its second consecutive national football title.
According to police, LeCroy was driving a 2021 Ford Expedition owned by the university. The vehicle was traveling 104 mph in an area that has a 40 mph posted speed limit at the time of the crash. Her blood alcohol level was .197, more than twice the legal limit.
Police say LeCroy was racing with a vehicle being driven by another University of Georgia football player, Jalen Carter. Video camera footage shows both vehicles switching lanes, driving in center lanes, and driving in opposing traffic lanes at high rates of speed in trying to outdistance each other.
At some point, LeCroy’s vehicle veered off the road, slamming into two utility poles and several trees. The impact ejected Willock from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Emergency responders had to free LeCroy from the vehicle and later died from her injuries.
Investigations after the crash revealed that LeCroy had received several excessive speeding citations in the months leading up to the accident and that the university assisted in trying to get those violations downgraded.
Police would later charge Carter with racing and reckless driving. Last month, he agreed to a plea deal that allowed him to avoid potential jail time. Carter pled no contest and was sentenced to one-year probation, a fine of $1,000, and 80 hours of community service.
